Swansea was the first community chaplaincy in the UK.
It is a prison-based service which reaches out into the community. It is a classic example of there being no 'one-fits-all' design for Community Chaplaincy compared to other projects working "outside in", the project is extremely effective in working "inside out" so to speak!
It has been one of the lead projects in the UK in promoting and sharing good practice and has taken a lead in ensuring that good information is disseminated to all interested parties. Community Chaplaincy, prior to Swansea’s beginnings, was entirely new ground in prison work. Many other projects have benefited from their experience, and have found great value in “not re-inventing the wheel” thanks to their open hearted, open hand ethos and desire for Community Chaplaincy as a concept to flourish at local level.
